Robert Criswell Strait
September 17, 1925 - October 20, 2012
Robert Criswell Strait, 87, of Mart, passed away Oct. 20, 2012, at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Littlepage Funeral Home, in Mart, with the Rev. Denise Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at the Mart Cemetery.
Robert was born Sept. 17, 1925, to Robert D. and Faye Strait. He was married to the love of his life, Lois Gene Freeman, for 64 years. Robert's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Criswell, were Mart's first pioneers, building the first log cabin and well. Later, the family built a house on Limestone Avenue, only 100 feet away from the cabin. In this house Robert was born and still resided with his wife when he died.
Robert and his wife, Lois, were self-independent truckers for 54 years. In the cotton business, his work took him to gins from the Panhandle to South Texas. Their company also hauled hay and delivered firewood throughout Central Texas. He employed many members of the Mart community, including Mart high school boys. These students respected Robert and learned about the value of hard work and honesty. Many thought of him as their second father.
Papa's life is a great evidence of love and honor, and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Strait of Mart; daughter, Faye Oswald of Robinson; granddaughter, Stacy Phillips and husband, Biff, of Speegleville; great-granddaughter, Cheyenne Phillips; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, C.M. Freeman of Mart, Donald Freeman and wife, Marie, of Waco, Gerald Freeman and wife, Betty, of Mart, Henry Freeman and wife, Sharon, of Littlefield, Ruby Brown and husband, Bill, of Robinson, and Helen Cox and husband, Dean, of Waco.
Pallbearers will be Brent Freeman, Gerald Freeman Jr., Darwin Hefelfinger, Doug Matthys, Bradley Potts, and Garbert Wright. Honorary pallbearers will be Melvin Hefelfinger, Wayne Hurst, Bill Oswald, Gary Schimschat, Aubrey Strunck, and Butch Walker
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Mart, and the Mart Volunteer Fire Department.
