William J. Mercer
November 28, 1919 - February 2, 2015
William J. Mercer passed away on February 2, 2015 after suffering a fall at home. Mr. Mercer was born to Jesse James and Emma Christine (Wolf) Mercer November 28, 1919 in Franklin, Texas. He spent his younger years performing farm work in the fields of Texas and New Mexico.
He met Adine Arnold the summer of 1941 in New Mexico. It was love at first sight and following a three year courtship they were married April 15,1944. They spent 64 very happy years together. Adine preceded Bill in death and went to be with our Lord on July 12, 2008.
He is survived by his four children and their spouses: Kathy Stone (John) of Warner Robins GA, William J. Mercer Jr. (Hilah) of Merritt Island FL, Janie Winter (Quentin) of Selma CA, and Don Mercer (Anita) of Miramonte CA. Seven grandchildren, and fifteen great grand children also survive him. Two brothers and six sisters preceded him in death. His sister Laura Hasbrouck of Alamogordo, New Mexico is his last surviving sibling.
Bill served four years in the US Air Corp during World War Two. After the war Bill and Adine settled in Kingsburg, CA where he served the community as a police officer for 11 years. He was Chief of Police for 2 years before he left the force to deliver mail. He retired from the Kingsburg Post Office after 21 years of government service.
Bill started attending Kingsburg First Baptist in 1953. He served the church in many ways over the years. He was a Sunday school teacher, deacon and usher. He acted as head usher for many years until he was unable to do so. He guided the youth as Boys Brigade leader. He gave many young men in the church and the community their first opportunity to experience the wonders of God’s nature in the wilderness country of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Bill’s good nature and sense of humor were a blessing to everyone with whom he came in contact. He always had a smile on his face and never had an unkind word for anyone. His life reflected his strong faith in Jesus Christ.
