Criswell Cemetery’s Annual Homecoming Event Draws Crowd
A large crowd attended the eighth annual Criswell Cemetery Association Memorial Homecoming Day Sunday, June 14, at the Criswell community center.
The cemetery and community center grounds are attractive, and was ready for the Sunday visitors.
The front side and south of the cemetery fence was built last year, and this year the last two sides have been extended with a steel fence.
C. A. McCoy, president of the Association, said the association borrowed $575 this year to finish the fence all the way around the cemetery, and hoped to be able to pay for it in two years.
The community center building was the Criswell school house. It has recently had the partition removed and is now a large auditorium, which is used for church, Sunday School and community activities.
Beginning the day’s activities at 11 a.m., a program was presented under the direction of Mrs. George Stone, who was master of ceremonies.
Thomas Criswell was in charge of the congregational singing, and Mrs. C. A. McCoy was pianist, and also was accompanist for the special singing.
Beginning the program, three congregational songs were sung, led by Thomas Criswell. The welcome address was given by Nelda Stone, response by David Breed; song, “Where We’ll Never Grow Old,” by Mrs. Jane Baron; duet, “Whisper A Prayer,” by Nancy Shook and Sue Pharis.
A memorial reading was given by Mrs. Floyd Shook; song, “Precious Memories,” by Mrs. Jane Baron.
The mortuary list was read by Mrs. George Stone, as follows: Martin Walts, Henry Walts, John Moore, Marcus Criswell, John Absher, Wesley Stone, John Walts.
A memorial prayer was led by Albert Wolf. The invocation was given by C. C. Stone. The Memorial Address was given by Judge John C. Patterson.
At noon a basket lunch was served on tables under shade trees.
After lunch congregational songs were sung, led by Jasper Caddell, Thomas Criswell, Jack Stone and Mrs. Jane Baron.
A business meeting was held with Mr. McCoy presiding. The minutes of last year’s homecoming were read by Thomas Criswell. Contributions were made for the upkeep of the cemetery.
The nominating committee, composed of G. W. Stone, Jasper Caddell and Fred Broxton; nominated for president, C. A. McCoy; for vice-president, J. E. Ray; secretary-treasurer, Thomas Criswell; business manager, C. C. Stone; and directors, J. L. Caddell, Walter Wolf, Fred Broxton, H. F. Stone Sr., A. J. Wolf and Thomas Criswell, all were elected.
