Twenty-Eighth Annual Memorial Service
The twenty-eighth annual Criswell Cemetery Association meeting was held on June 10, 1979.
The meeting opened with a hymn and prayer by Mr. Paul Rucker. The minutes of the previous year were read. The treasurer’s report was given.
The speaker was Rev. Hugh Durham of Conroe, Texas. He reminisced about his boyhood days in the Criswell community and in his message, stressed the importance of being a good Christian person and setting an example for our children.
Mrs. Jewel Rucker read the mortuary list, the two deaths being Buster Winkelmann and Nancy Ray. She had also remarked that there had been no funerals at the Criswell Cemetery last year. The outgoing directors for 1979 are James Stone, Leon Breitkreutz and Shirley Caddell.
Cara Albright sang “Amazing Grace” accompanied by Sandra Weathers. The congregation sang the last verse and was dismissed with a prayer by Thomas Criswell.
In the afternoon business meeting, three new directors were elected: Gene Brown, G. Z. (Peaches) Stone and Phillip Weathers. The meeting adjourned and congregational singing followed.
A directors’ meeting was held under the tent. The construction of the new porches was discussed. They were not satisfactory, but rather than redo them, the directors decided to purchase two pieces of plywood to lay in front of the doors when the building was in use to prevent heels from getting stuck in the cracks and possibly causing accidents. Chemicals need to be put near the cemetery fence to eliminate the weeds. It was decided that September would be a good time to fertilize the bermuda grass in the cemetery. Gene Brown was elected President; G. Z. Stone was elected Vice-President, and Shirley Caddell was asked to keep the secretary position. Shirley Stone will continue to be treasurer. The program chairman for next year is Thomas Criswell.
