Criswell Cemetery’s Annual Memorial Homecoming Held, Big Crowd Attends
The Fourteenth Annual Criswell Cemetery Memorial Homecoming was held Sunday, June 13, at the Criswell Community Center.
It was a bright sunshiny day with plenty of breeze, which made it a good day for the extra, extra large crowd. There were people present from all over the state and also from Oklahoma, Alabama and Illinois.
The community center grounds were clean and freshly mowed. Grass, flowers of all colors, and also artificial wreaths, were placed on graves, appropriate for picture taking. The directors have been busy having the monuments leveled, the graves filled in with sand, the interior of the community center building painted, the doors and windows replaced where needed, one porch replaced and one restroom repaired.
A program was planned by the program chairman, Mrs. George Stone, which began at 11 a.m. O. N. Campbell was master of ceremonies for the program. Mrs. Aubrey Stone was pianist. Thomas Criswell was song leader. Sheryl Patterson gave the welcome address. Keith Stone gave the response. Mrs. Jane Baron sang “The Old Rugged Cross,” and “It Pays to Serve Jesus.”
Mrs. Don Sandhoff gave a memorial reading, “I Know God Understands.” Mrs. Ivy Moon gave the mortuary list, which included the names of Mrs. Birdie Cooper Warneke, Mrs. Lonie Cooper Warneke, Mrs. Wesley Cooper, Mrs. John Durham, Mrs. Alf Climer, John Maines and Dwaine Wolf. Mrs. Moon paid a tribute in prayer to the ones passed on.
Andrew Caddell spoke on “My Growing Up at Criswell.” Amy and Carroll Caddell sang “How Long Has It Been,” and “How Great Thou Art.” Rev. Fred Wolf of Murchison read Scripture and talked on “Memorable Times.” Mrs. Mable Schmidt and Rev. and Mrs. Fred Wolf sang “In the Shelter of His Arms,” and “I’ll be No Stranger There,” accompanied by Mrs. Doris Green at the piano.
Special recognitions were made for the person traveling the longest distance, who was Winfred Stone, who is with the U. S. Navy Training Center at Great Lakes, Ill. The oldest person attending was Mrs. Alice Stone, who is 85 years old. Special recognition was made for all attending from other states.
The benediction was by Rev. Wolf. At noon a basket lunch was served on tables under shade trees. C. C. Stone gave the invocation.
After lunch a business meeting was held with the president, Thomas Criswell, in charge. The minutes and treasurer’s report were read by Mr. Criswell in the absence of the secretary, Mrs. Chester Tate. Contributions were made for the upkeep of the cemetery.
Officers and directors were elected for the coming year. They are as follows: President, Thomas Criswell, vice president; C. C. Stone; secretary-treasurer, Mrs. C. C. Stone; business manager, A. W. Walts; program chairman, Mrs. George Stone; food chairman, Mrs. Dwain Caddell. The directors are: George Stone, Elmer Smith, A. W. Walts; Charlie Stone, Oscar Bonner, Fred Broxton, W. N. Stone, Thomas Criswell and Dwain Caddell.
A sing-song was held throughout the afternoon. Those leading were Rev. Wolf and Mr. Criswell. Accompanist at the piano were Mrs. Aubrey Stone, Carol Caddell and Winfred Stone.
